Here's a saucy little discussion to get going today. A lot of talk these days is on Government bodies attempting to force control/ownership/ or censorship to the internet. For various reasons and purposes.

The FBI shutdown Megauploads a few months ago. The consequence? Anonymous shut down the US Justice Department. Now I am not trying to accuse anonymous of vigilantism, nor condone their behavior. However they demonstrate that A LOT of people heavily oppose such actions.

Are you one of them? Or do you believe the internet needs censorship?

    Discuss!

Edit: Changed my alots to a lots to please CB

Im ok with some. The internet seems a bit too convenient and easily accessible for younger viewers (as example). Just like all be it, its the parents responsibility to not let a 10 yr old watch an R rated movie, if the child skips out of home and school, and sneaks to a theater... the theater has controls to disallow and further protect the family. Now... this example also can be overwritten by the parent, if Bad Parent gives permission to watch said movie and escorts the minor there, paying for the ticket, and seating beside the... then thats their right.

    Total disallow... I disagree with.

Im fine with optional censorship. Like if a site wants to censor this or that. Or a parent wants to use parental controls. Im against forced censorship though. I believe the best way to protect children isnt to censor the internet, but either watch them better, or develop a better program to block things from them

The internet cannot be censored, it is far to large and the community, like anonymous, is far to smart and determined. In my country, unlike china, we have hundreds of internet companies; which, vastly limit the control of the government, to do anything that would give anonymous aneurysms, the government would need to go to each of those companies and make them do it, oh wait and get thru all of those company's lawyers. which would give time for anonymous to recover and counter-strike. Hard.

Even though most of us know that we have used pirated sites it is wrong to do so. You are actually stealing from the original owners of the program or music etc. They worked so hard to produce something that you like, but you cannot support them back by buying their product.

I'm completely against any type of internet censorship. It's one of the most vibrant parts of our economy and society in general. I see no reason for the government to get involved via censoring what people put online. It's none of their business and they need to keep out. It's one of the few things they haven't completely screwed up.

When it comes to internet censorship I think the better way out is the user's discretion. I am not an advocate of internet censorship, people should be free to live their life at least when they come online. Tell me where is the freedom if every article or discussion put up on the social media or blogs are now being censored.

The internet became a very unsafe place for us all, and it is making things closer to us that are usually far away. Some of them good, most of them bad. There should be a censorship on some level but I think that it is nearly impossible to censor every bad thing since there are too many so why bother. And there is always going to be someone to bring that up again even if it gets censored. So there is not real point in it.
